the dream versus the reality…

everybody knows ccna is tough and for a lot of people it establishes a brutal truth… back in the early 2000’s it was strictly multiple choice and i think the percentage of people passing it then was a lot higher… not so anymore… think of the ccie’s back then, and the one’s who have been holding ccie in the last 10 years… a lot of them passed through ccna when it was basically, read the book and roll the dice… the landscape has changed considerably, the delivery methods are so much better, and the cert itself is much more meaningful… the cct and ccent have also imbued it with more stature… anybody nowadays who claims all you have to do is read the book and show up for the test is simply full of shit… anybody, no matter the level of experience, who thinks they are above and beyond ccna had better revisit that position…

i’ve worked with so called network engineers, many not certified in anything, who couldn’t pass that test… and for my money, ccna is a testament to the understanding of solid and fundamental networking principles that are paramount for the proper performance of basic networking duties.. without this a person who dares call himself a network engineer is only lying to himself and everybody around him…

as soon as i hear someone declare they are a network engineer. and after i am finished rolling my eyes, the first question that springs to mind is; who says? you? prove it…  for these folks i have a standing bet; i’ll give you one month mr uncertified network engineer with all that experience, to study for ccna, just little no count ccna, and in exactly one month i will schedule you to sit that test and pay for it myself… if you pass, you keep the cert… if you fail, you pay me back for the test fee… simple…

so for many the idea of ccna alone is a dream… it was for me… one of the bonuses for having ccnp now is that i will never have to go through the pain of ccna again…

as i look into the abyss that is ccie i see ccna again, and again… in fact i’m coming around to the idea that ccie is  a ccna hot fudge sundae with ccnp sprinkles on top…

the dream is to sit my ass down in front of that lab console on judgement day and type config t for the first time…

the reality is it’s all go, no quit, big nuts and i don’t care what you think, until then…
