2.3.b Implement and troubleshoot PPP

ppp can use frame… you knew that… build the frame interface as normal and test… you have established frame…

r2(config-if)#do sh frame pvc | b DLCI
DLCI = 102, DLCI USAGE = LOCAL, PVC STATUS = ACTIVE, INTERFACE = Serial0/0

input pkts 6             output pkts 6            in bytes 554
out bytes 554            dropped pkts 0           in pkts dropped 0
out pkts dropped 0                out bytes dropped 0
in FECN pkts 0           in BECN pkts 0           out FECN pkts 0
out BECN pkts 0          in DE pkts 0             out DE pkts 0
out bcast pkts 1         out bcast bytes 34
5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
pvc create time 00:03:41, last time pvc status changed 00:03:41
r2(config-if)#do ping 192.168.23.3

Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 192.168.23.3, timeout is 2 seconds:
!!!!!
Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 16/21/28 ms

to use ppp over frame lose the interface ip and configure it in global configuration mode instead:

r2(config-if)#no ip add
r2(config-if)#do sh run int s0/0
Building configuration…

Current configuration : 125 bytes
!
interface Serial0/0
no ip address
encapsulation frame-relay
serial restart-delay 0
frame-relay interface-dlci 102
end

r2(config-if)#interface virtual-template 1
r2(config-if)#ip add 192.168.23.2 255.255.255.0

assign the virtual template to the interface’s dlci:

r2(config-if)#fram interface-dlci 102 ppp virt 1
r2(config-fr-dlci)#
*Mar  1 01:32:23.251: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface Virtual-Access2, changed state to up

do it on the other side…

r3(config-fr-dlci)#do sh int virt 2
Virtual-Access2 is up, line protocol is up
Hardware is Virtual Access interface
Internet address is 192.168.23.3/24
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 100000 Kbit, DLY 100000 usec,
reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
Encapsulation PPP, LCP Open
Open: IPCP
PPPoFR vaccess, cloned from Virtual-Template1

for chap, do chap configuration as normal:

r2#sh run | b user
username r3 password 0 cisco

and add to the virtual interface:

interface Virtual-Template1
ip address 192.168.23.2 255.255.255.0
ppp authentication chap

watch the challenge…
